Health Sachet No 309:

Many of you are grappling with your kids playing video games incessantly. So how much video game time should kids get?

A recent Spanish study tracked 2442 children of 7 to 11 years, who played video games from 0 to 18 hours a week.

Some findings:

  • Children who played for more than 9 hours a week had behaviour and conduct problems.
  • Children who played 1-2 hours a week had cognitive benefits such as better motor response to visual cues.
  • MRI scans showed gamers had brain changes in basal ganglia, that controls involuntary movements.
  • There was no change in attention and memory skills between gamers and non-gamers.

Discourage children from video gaming for more than an hour a day.
